Origin
Hand fan has been around as early as 6th BCE in Japan. The version had a rigid frame compared to the current advance folding hand fan. There are documents written of its existence that early period. The Chinese also started using the hand fans as early as 2th BC, theirs was made of wooden bamboo. It is documented in the Song dynasty, giving the hand fan a long history in the far east. Hand fan was also recorded to be in use in the 4th BC in the Greece region which can be attributed to the empires which existed in those regions during that period. The spread from the presumable origin in the Far East to Europe can be attributed to the early trade which was attributed to the silk road.
Developments
Handheld fans have been developed from the ancient rigid hand-held fans to a more sophisticated handheld fan. It was once a status symbol in previous empires and kingdoms. It has been evolving during the period but lost its status symbol in the 20th century but hand fan lovers once celebrate their hand fans. During the 17th and 18th-century folding hand, fans were designed and it was used as a symbol of the feminine. There are many portray from those centuries which show ladies of stature holding their folding hand fans in their hands while posing. During those centuries some designs made of elegant bird feathers were used in a colorful way.
